In England and Wales since 1st July 1837, all births (and stillbirths) must be registered with the registrar of births and deaths in the district where the child was born. In Northern Ireland it is since 1st July 1864, and Scotland it is since 1st January 1855.
In England and Wales, and Northern Ireland all such records are registered with the General Register Office (GRO), and for Scotland the National Records of Scotland.
There are two types of Birth Certificates, the Full Birth Certificate also known as the ‘Certified Copy of an Entry’, and the Short Birth Certificate.
The main difference between the two certificates is that the Full Birth Certificate contains the mother’s and father’s (or second parent’s) details,
The main difference between the two certificates is that the Full Birth Certificate contains the mother’s details and, if they are present on the register entry, the father’s (or second parent’s) details; The father’s details can only have been registered if at the time of registration, the parents were married, or both parents jointly signed the birth register. Whereas the Short Birth Certificate only contains the child’s name, sex, date of birth, and place of birth.
We provide Apostille and Embassy attestation for both types of Birth Certificates. However, we strongly recommend the Full Birth Certificate since the Short Birth Certificates are not really used much nowadays and not as official as the Full Birth Certificates.
Please note, to Apostille and attest Birth Certificates, we would need the original certificate which has been stamped or sealed by the General Register Office. Unfortunately copies and/or certified true copies cannot be accepted unless otherwise issued by the General Register Office.
If you have lost your Birth certificate, or need one for any other purposes, a replacement copy will help you. We can supply Birth Certificates from the UK including overseas births where the location was once a British territory or registered with a British consulate. Use our UK Document Order service and we can provide you a replacement Birth Certificate.
