When a document is required in an official capacity by an authority or organisation outside of the UK, it is often very difficult for them to determine whether the document is genuine and legal. To legalise your documents, you will need to obtain an Apostille.
Apostille is a certificate attached by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) verifying the authenticity of that document so that it can be recognised by official bodies and accepted when used in another country. Each Apostille is dated, given a unique reference number and registered.

To get documents legalised for use outside of the UK, many countries ask that you get your documents attested by their UK based Embassy in addition to getting an Apostille.
If the country which you intend to use your legalised documents in is a member of the Hague Convention of 1961 then the documents only need to be legalised by means of an Apostille. Otherwise they will need an Embassy attestation after getting an Apostille at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
Each Embassy or High Commission will have their individual rules and requirements on what information may be needed in order to attest your document. The Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents brought about a basic simplification of the utilisation of public documents outside of the countries from which they originated.
If the country which you intend to use your legalised documents is a member of the Hague Convention of 1961 then your documents only need to be legalised by means of an Apostille. Otherwise they will need an Embassy attestation after getting an Apostille at the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office. The following countries are members of the Hague Convention of 1961:
